1896-1979Stuart Heisler alcanzo un alto grado de reconoci miento profesional como montador, tarea que le ocupa casi dos decadas, las de los anos 20 y 30. Consigue alcanzar el estatus de realizador en 1940, despues de dirigir la segunda unidad de Huracan sobre la isla (The Hurricane, John Ford, 1937). Desde entonces, desarrolla una carrera solida, primero dentro de la serie B en interesantes filmes de terror, despues con presupuestos mas liberales en peliculas de genero, entre las que se incluyen una version de la novela de Dashiel Hammett, The Glass Key (1942), y un remake de El ultimo refugio (High Sierra, Raoul Walsh, 1941), estrenado con el titulo I Died a Thousand Times (1955), que no hace olvidar el original. Otras peliculas como Tulsa, ciudad de lucha (Tulsa, 1949) y La estrella (The Star, 1953), vehiculo para el lucimiento de Bette Davis, evidencian el buen pulso narrativo de Heisler, que lo posee especialmente en sus cuatro westerns, tres de los cuales, El caballero del Oeste, Dallas, ciudad fronteriza y Colinas ardientes, son magnificos. 1887-1980Nacido en Nueva York el 11 de marzo de 1887, los primeros anos de la vida de Raoul Walsh son oscuros. Lo encontramos ya, sin duda, en 1907 como actor de la version teatral de “The Clansman”, novela de Thomas Dixon que inspirarara a David W. Griffith su celebre pelicula El nacimiento de una nacion (The Birth of a Nation, 1915). Despues de la correspondiente gira, de vuelta ya en su ciudad natal, continua con su carrera de actor que, entre otros logros, lo lleva a interpretar, a las ordenes de Griffith, el papel de John Wilkes Booth, asesino del presidente Lincoln, en El nacimiento de una nacion. Ya antes, en 1914, habia empezado a dirigir bajo la supervision del propio Griffith.Su primer largometraje, co-realizado por Christy Cabanne, es Life of Villa (1915), pero sus dos peliculas mudas mas famosas son, sin discusion, The Thief of Bagdad (El ladron de Bagdad, 1924), deslumbrante espectaculo visual ro dado para la productora de su protagonista, Douglas Fairbanks, y La fragil voluntad (Sadie Thompson, 1928), melodrama a la medida de su protagonista, Gloria Swanson, que produjo el filme. Hasta entonces, albores ya del sonoro, Walsh no habia prestado una atencion especial al western. Lo hizo de inmediato, como muestran sus primeros filmes sonoros del genero, En el viejo Ari zona (In Old Arizona, 1929), que fue el primero de una larga lista con el Cisco Kid como protagonista, y La gran jornada (The Big Trail, 1930), de larga duracion y largo presupuesto. Precisamente durante el rodaje de la primera de las dos peliculas citadas perdio un ojo en un accidente, por lo que tuvo que ser sustituido por Warner Baxter como protagonista de la pelicula, y auxiliado por Irving Cummings en la direccion. En la Fox entre 1929 y 1935, en la Paramount hasta 1939 y en lo sucesivo en Warner Bros, Raoul Walsh ira consolidando su categoria como realizador hasta 1964, ano de estreno de su ultima pelicula, precisamente un western, hermoso y testimonial.Aunque sus habilidades como creador cinematografico tienen mas largo alcance que el que se limita al western, dejemos constancia de que, con toda probabilidad, es en este genero donde consigue sus mejores obras, sencillas, serenas, con un importante sentido de la narracion en imagenes. Como caso curioso, hay que indicar que Walsh hizo un remake de dos de sus peliculas, El ultimo refugio (High Sierra, 1941), dura historia de gangsters inscrita de lleno en el genero negro que convirtio en una estrella a Humphrey Bogart, y Objetivo Birmania (Objective Burma!, 1945), filme belico. Ambos remakes los realizo en clave de western: Juntos hasta la muerte (Colorado Territory, 1949) y Tam bores lejanos (Distant Drums, 1951), respectivamente. Algo indica este detalle sobre su “aficion” al genero. Al final de su carrera construyo algunos de sus mejores westerns, y tambien alguno que otro en tono de parodia, como Un rey para cuatro reinas (The King and Four Queens, 1956) y La rubia y el sheriff (The Sheriff of Fractured Jaw, 1959).In Old Arizona (En el viejo Arizona) (co-d.: Irving Cummings). 1929. 95 minutos. 13 Hawks, Howard
1896-1977La aparente ligereza de las peliculas de Howard Hawks es enganosa. Detras de unos filmes que, a primera vista, solo pretenden entretener al espectador, hay mucho mas; mas de lo que pueden ofrecer no pocos directores intelectualmente comprometidos. Por eso, hay que afirmar rotundamente que Howard Hawks es uno de los realizadores mas grandes del cine americano y del cine en general, a la altura de los diez o doce mas ilustres de todos los tiempos. La cosa empezo en el verano de 1916, cuando un joven estudiante de ingenieria, buen de portista, aficionado a los automoviles, decidio aprovechar las vacaciones de verano trabajando en Fa mous Players-Lasky, la futura Paramount, como ascensorista. Un ano despues, ya graduado, vuelve, ahora para colaborar en la produccion como decorador, montador, director de casting, ayudante de direccion y todo lo que fuera necesario hasta que, despues de algun nuevo parentesis, se consolida como guionista, lo que facilita su paso a la direccion, que tuvo lugar en 1926 con la produccion Fox The Road to Glory. De las ocho peliculas mudas que realizo, la mas “hawksiana” es, sin duda, Una novia en cada puerto (A Girl in Every Port, 1928), pero el director es, sin discusion, un hombre del sonoro, acaso por la esplendida utilizacion de los dialogos que lo caracterizo, y que se pone de manifiesto de forma extrema en La fiera de mi nina (Bringing Up Baby, 1938), una de las cumbres de la comedia. Todo aquello que toco Hawks, lo dignifico: la comedia, como se ha puesto de manifiesto, pero tambien el cine negro, con El sueno eterno (The Big Sleep, 1946), el filme de aventuras, con Hatari! (1962) y, desde luego, el western, genero en el que cada una de sus incursiones originaba una obra maestra. Rio Bravo es, sin ningun genero de dudas, una de las dos o tres mejores peliculas de un genero tan inagotable como la vida. Al parecer, el origen de la pelicula hay que encontrarlo en la irritacion que le producia a Hawks Solo ante el peligro (High Noon, Fred Zinnemann, 1952), cuyo metraje discurre en la tarea de encontrar ayuda para que el sheriff del lugar pueda enfrentarse a unos pistoleros que se encuentran camino de la ciudad. La idea motriz de Hawks, permanente a lo largo de toda su filmografia, de mostrar a personas (preferentemente hombres porque las mujeres son, sobre todo, causa de conflictos) que estan realizando su trabajo y lo realizan lo mejor que saben, es la historia de todos y cada uno de sus westerns, particularmente de su falsa coleccion de “rios”, formada por dos peliculas en lugar de cuatro, porque Rio Rojo es, en realidad, Red River, y en Rio de sangre ni siquiera aparece la palabra en el titulo original. Solo Rio Bravo y Rio Lobo, peliculas fronterizas donde las haya, responden a la idea que acuno el termino unificador para las cuatro peliculas. Estas dos ultimas, y la estupenda El Dorado, remake mas o menos encubierto de Rio Bravo, si que permanecen unidas por estrechos lazos cronologicos, estilisticos y tematicos.Viva Villa! (.Viva Villa!) 1912-1991Nacido en Chicago y graduado en el Jesus College, Cambridge, encuentra trabajo en la biblioteca del film de Warner Bros, donde se inicia en tareas de montaje. Como director, empieza en 1946 con peliculas de presupuesto bajo, que fue capaz de trascender. En 1949 deja Warner Bros despues de ca torce anos de relacion con la productora y se establece como director independiente, lo que tiene la ventaja de poder abordar proyectos mas personales, y la desventaja de la inestabilidad profesional. Pocos realizadores poseen la habilidad que tiene Don Siegel para narrar en imagenes. Ausente de retorica, el aspecto visual de sus filmes es de una precision y sencillez dificiles de igualar, incluso en sus filmes menos afortunados. En una filmografia riquisima, llena de aciertos, destacan, a mi juicio, dos peliculas bien alejadas en el tiempo; por una parte, la mitica La invasion de los ladrones de cuerpos (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, 1956), no estrenada comercialmente en Espana en su momento, pero bien conocida a traves de la pequena pantalla, perteneciente al genero fantastico, cuyo “mensaje” progresista esta muy lejos de la habitual soflama. La segunda, un filme atipico que podria no ser considerado como un western, pero que en decision personal he decidido incluir aqui, aunque solo sea por su localizacion temporal, la de la Guerra de Secesion norteamericana, es El seductor (The Beguiled, 1971), introspectiva y cruel como pocas peliculas pueden llegar a serlo. Con mas motivo aun, puede resultar extrano considerar que La jungla humana sea un western. 1911-1992Nacido en Oak Pak, Illinois, pasa su juventud en la sala de montaje de RKO. Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial colabora en la realizacion de documentales de propaganda y es al terminar esta cuando, contratado por Columbia, tiene la oportunidad de dirigir su primer largometraje en 1946, The Man Who Dared. En 1949 pasa a Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, donde sus posibilidades de abordar proyectos mas ambiciosos aumentan. Es precisamente en los anos 50 cuando Sturges alcanza un importante prestigio como director de westerns y filmes de accion. John Sturges se muestra siempre como un realizador enormemente eficaz. Lo habia sido en sus comienzos, cuando bregaba con la dificil y formativa serie B, y lo fue mas tarde, cuando se le encomendaron proyectos mas ambiciosos y costosos. Ejemplo tipico de cineasta de genero, cuenta en su haber con un buen punado de magnificas peliculas entre las que se encuentran algunos westerns. Debo confesar una especial predileccion por La gran evasion (The Great Escape, 1963), con un reparto casi exclusivamente masculino que le otorgo, en lo sucesivo, la fama de director de hombres, y, ya dentro del western, por Fort Bravo y Duelo de titanes. En esta ultima pelicula revisa de nuevo la historia, cercana al mito, de Wyatt Earp y el celebre duelo en O.K. Corral que, entre otros, habia tratado John Ford en Pasion de los fuertes (My Darling Clementine, 1946). Sturges aborda el asunto en dos ocasiones, en la citada Duelo de titanes y, posteriormente, en La hora de las pistolas, una vi sion un tanto crepuscular del tema. Pero este filme corresponde ya a la ultima etapa creativa de Sturges, que podemos iniciar inmediatamente despues de La gran evasion, en la que recibio no pocas criticas ne gativas debido a cierto amaneramiento en la puesta en escena, que contrastaba con el vigor nada vacilante que caracterizo sus anos de plenitud.The Walking Hills. 1949. 78 minutos.
